Evaluation of Previous Student's Work - George Peat

XII Hours

I would give XII Hours 50 marks, since it does most things very right, with goood music which creates suspense, an intruiging title sequence, a variety of shots, and good lighting amongst other things. The only thing which i felt let them down was the occasionally bad framed shot which i felt could have been done better, for example when the protaganist is walking down the stairs.

Countdown ???

I would give Countdown ??? 37 marks. It has a good use of lighting, framing shots, and a variety of camera angles. However i feel that the film is marred by its small amount of camera shot types, poor acting, the titles at the end being so poor I cannot interpret the last word, and the music not having much of an impact, being barely noticable.

The Following

I would give The Following 49 marks, since it was good in most areas such as camera angles and shot types variation, music, acting isnt bad, and framing shots. However parts which mark it down are how fast the title is shown (i had to pause so i could know what it is called) and the lighting at the start is very dark in places, meaning that actor's faces and actions cannot be seen, making the viewer not know what is happening. This is solved when they enter the woods.

The Gift

I would give The Gift 30 marks. The music is very good, and make up at certain points is good. However the film is blighted by terrible lighting, meaning that barely anything can be seen at points, making camera angles and shot types indistinguishable.

Textual analysis - narrative openings

Day of the Dead

The opening of day of the dead helps to establish the bleak situation the characters are in in the post apocalyptic zombie-infested streets of hawaii, the film takes a while to unveil to unveil the zombies, but builds up to their appearance by showing disturbing imagery, such as corpses with crabs and spiders crawling over them.
In addition to this at the very beggining there is a dream sequence that alludes to the situation the characters face in the film, through foreshadowing.
Zombies are present throughout most of the opening after they have been revealed, and they are visable even in the camp, which shows that nowhere is safe

28 Days Later

The start quickly establishes the cause of the zombie infection, by showing the source of where it all begun.  When Cilian Murphy wakes up there is no immediate danger, however isolation is established, letting the viewer know that something is wrong. The isolation is made apparent by good shots of popular places with nobody there, such as outside of parliament, and in hospital.

28 Weeks Later

This film allowed the viewers to get a good idea of the situation, before quickly revealing the zombie threat, which proceeds to kill all but one of the beggining characters, the build up to this is long, and as soon as they let in the boy, all hell breaks loose, and the bleak, hopelessness of the situation escalates, the music evokes panic and distress, and gradually becomes more and more exiting as the situation gets worse and worse, the image of zombies running down from the hill shows that the main character is cornered.

Night Of The Living Dead

Starts by watching the car make its way to the graveyard, this is not a traditional start to a zombie film since no sense of dread or tension is made. It establishes the characters as brother and sister and why they are visiting the graveyard. The radio broadcast starts to give an impression of something being wrong but this is stopped almost immediately. Isolation in the graveyard is prominent, with threat being established when a lone person is spotted in the distance. Music didn't effect the mood too much.

Self Evaluation: George Peat

Use of Camera
My film uses a variety of shot angles and types, this gives the film variety throughout its duration. Examples of our shots are panning, close ups, medium shots and others all done from differant angles (high, low etc). Our shots are completely steady during the film, this is because of the use of a tripod at all times and being onsteady ground. The shots were carefully framed to ensure that the sun did not ruin it, the sun can be noticed in one shot but in that circumstance i think it works to our advantage. We made sure that rules were used correctly, such as the 180 and 30 degree rules, this made sure the film didnt have jumps or disorientate the viewers.

Use of Editing
Our editing for the film was the best which could attempt to do except for the lighting which i deem as too dark in certain areas, making what is on screen difficult to decifer. The films continuity is mostly good, however it is very apparent that it has gone wrong twice; when the civilians were jumping over the fence, two of them swap over when the shot has changed; another time occurs earlier on in the film when the civilian falls over, and when he is being helped up heis in a slightly different place.

Selection of Content
The costumes and make up used by the zombies made them seem like more of a threat, such as the fakebloodandeye make up, making them realistic. The only prop used was a camera which served its purpose well. The location we used gave a sense of isolation and was ideal for what we needed. The actors we used were mostly proffesional, they occasionally made noise during shots which meant that the sound had to be silenced during editing.

Self-assessment
My contributions to the film were, assembling the actors, getting the makeup and costumes for the zombies. I was an actor in the film playing one of the zombies four zombies at multiple points. I also helped set up the camera for certain anglesand different types of shots, and making sure there was nothing not wanted in the shots. During the editing it was a joint effort making sure it was the best we could do with what we had. Improvements which could be made to the filmare re shooting certain shots to ensure there are no continuity errors, and to change the lighting at certain times to make what ishappening more clear. I do not think there is anything I would entirely change since I think what was produced was at a good enough quality for a first time try, therefore we shall just try to improve on what we already have achieved.
